Bolton

A Greater Manchester town in North West England is Bolton (/ˈbɒltən/, locally /ˈboʊtən/). Part of the fee of Marsey were Little Bolton and Great Bolton, and in 1212, by a knight's fee's twelfth part service to Randle de Marsey, as plough-land by Roger de Bolton, Little Bolton was held.

It is 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the city of Manchester close to the West Pennine Moors and surrounded by smaller towns and villages which form the Bolton Metropolitan Borough together, of which the centre that is administrative is Bolton. A large £300 million expansion with the University of Bolton at its core, is the Bolton Innovation Zone. Comprises the Farnworth Campus and Town Centre Campus is Bolton Sixth Form College.

At the U of Bolton Stadium, Bolton Wanderers football club play home games, and Amir Khan, the WBA World light-welterweight champion, was born in the town. The Octagon Theatre and the Museum and Art Gallery of Bolton, as well as one of the public libraries that was earliest established after the 1850 Act of Public Libraries, are included in Cultural interests.

Connected initially Bolton to Leigh's Liverpool Canal and Leeds, a link that was important with the Liverpool port for the American raw cotton import, but was extended in 1829 to link up with the Manchester to Liverpool Line, was the railway. Bolton, from the jurisdiction of Lancashire County Council, became independent and self-governing, and was granted status of County Borough in 1889.

Consists of Carboniferous series' Coal Measures and sandstones, is the Bolton geological formation; the Measures that are lower are mixed in the northern part of Bolton with underlying Millstone Grit. Founded on a location next to the parish church in 1524 as a gs for boys was Bolton School; with a free grammar school that had been founded shortly after 1641, it merged around 1656.

Founded near to the parish church by Canon James Slade in 1855, was the Bolton Church Institute. An English Football League club which was formed in 1874 and played at Burnden Park for 102 years, is the Bolton Wanderers F.C. Provided by the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which provides Accident and Emergency and other services at Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth, are Hospital services.
